How do you specify a regex character range that will work in European languages other than English?
WIKI_WORD = /\b(\p{Ll}\w+\.)?\p{Lu}\p{Ll}+\p{Lu}\w*\b/u
should work in Ruby 1.9. \p{Lu}
and \p{Ll}
are shorthands for uppercase and lowercase Unicode letters. (\w
already includes the underscore)
See also this answer - you might need to run Ruby in UTF-8 mode for this to work, and possibly your script must be encoded in UTF-8, too.
Regex to Match only language chars (all language)?
If you use Steve Levithan's XRegExp package with Unicode add-ons, then it's easy:
var regex = XRegExp('^\\p{L}*$');
(Note that ^
is the start-of-string anchor, and $
is the end-of-string anchor, not vice versa)
In plain JavaScript, you need to construct the ranges yourself. I've taken the liberty to construct a plain-JavaScript regex from Steve's source code:
So you can use that instead, if you just need exactly that feature and not the entire XREgExp package.

Regular expression not working for at least one European character
You just need to remove the anchors and the quantifier and use test
:
alert(/(?![×÷])[A-Za-zÀ-ÿ]/.test("ß1111"))
alert(/(?![×÷])[A-Za-zÀ-ÿ]/.test("ö"))
alert(/(?![×÷])[A-Za-zÀ-ÿ]/.test("12345"))
Java Regular expression for special characters across all languages
You may use \\p{Alnum}
to match any kind of letter or digit from any language.
private static final String ADDRESS_LINE_PATTERN = "[\\p{Alnum},\\s#\\-.]+";
See Pattern
javadoc for more info.
Detect strings with non English characters in Python
You can just check whether the string can be encoded only with ASCII characters (which are Latin alphabet + some other characters). If it can not be encoded, then it has the characters from some other alphabet.
Note the comment # -*- coding: ....
. It should be there at the top of the python file (otherwise you would receive some error about encoding)
# -*- coding: utf-8 -*-
def isEnglish(s):
try:
s.encode(encoding='utf-8').decode('ascii')
except UnicodeDecodeError:
return False
else:
return True
assert not isEnglish('slabiky, ale liší se podle významu')
assert isEnglish('English')
assert not isEnglish('ގެ ފުރަތަމަ ދެ އަކުރު ކަ')
assert not isEnglish('how about this one : 通 asfަ')
assert isEnglish('?fd4))45s&')
Concrete JavaScript regular expression for accented characters (diacritics)
The easier way to accept all accents is this:
[A-zÀ-ú] // accepts lowercase and uppercase characters
[A-zÀ-ÿ] // as above, but including letters with an umlaut (includes [ ] ^ \ × ÷)
[A-Za-zÀ-ÿ] // as above but not including [ ] ^ \
[A-Za-zÀ-ÖØ-öø-ÿ] // as above, but not including [ ] ^ \ × ÷
See Unicode Character Table for characters listed in numeric order.
Regex pattern including all special characters

Try a negative match:
Pattern regex = Pattern.compile("[^A-Za-z0-9]");
(this will ok only A-Z
"standard" letters and "standard" 0-9
digits.)
Can regular expressions work with different languages?
Short answer: yes.
More specifically it depends on your regex engine supporting unicode matches (as described here).
Such matches can complicate your regular expressions enormously, so I can recommend reading this unicode regex tutorial (also note that unicode implementations themselves can be quite a mess so you might also benefit from reading Joel Spolsky's article about the inner workings of character sets).
Detecting non european characters
Just allow unicode symbols in some given ranges, e.g.
/^[a-zÀ-öø-ž]+$/i
Example fiddle: https://jsfiddle.net/4y6e6bj5/3/
This regular expression allows basic latin / latin extended A (diacritics and accented letters). It excludes any other alphabet/symbol.
If you need to allow other specific unicode symbols, look at the unicode table and insert as many ranges as you need into the regular expression
Regular expression to match non-ASCII characters?
This should do it:
[^\x00-\x7F]+
It matches any character which is not contained in the ASCII character set (0-127, i.e. 0x0 to 0x7F).
You can do the same thing with Unicode:
[^\u0000-]+
For unicode you can look at this 2 resources:
- Code charts list of Unicode ranges
- This tool to create a regex filtered by Unicode block.
