HTMLElement.style:

The HTMLElement.style property is used to get as well as set the inline style of an element.

Why is my CSS style not being applied?

Have you tried forcing the selectors to be in the front of the class?

p span label.fancify {

font-size: 1.5em;
font-weight: 800;
font-family: Consolas, "Segoe UI", Calibri, sans-serif;
font-style: italic;
}

Usually it will add more weight to your CSS declaration.
My mistake ... There should be no space between the selector and the class.
The same goes for the ID. If you have for example:

<p id="myParagraph">Hello <span class="bolder">World</span></p>
</div>

You would style it like this:

div#first p#myParagraph {
color : #ff0000;
}

Just to make a complete example using a class:

div#first p#myParagraph span.bolder{
font-weight:900;
}

My CSS values does not reflect the values in my JavaScript

The elem.style.display property only reports a display property that is set directly on the DOM object. It does not report a style that is inherited from a style sheet.

To get a style value including those from a style sheet, you can use window.getComputedStyle().

There is a read only property of document called 'styleSheets'.

You can get the applied style from an element, excluding the default user agent styles using the accepted answer of that question i just mentioned.

That answer didn't supply the element's own style attribute content, so i have improved the code a bit:

How to get an HTML element's style values in JavaScript?

The element.style property lets you know only the CSS properties that were defined as inline in that element (programmatically, or defined in the style attribute of the element), you should get the computed style.

Is not so easy to do it in a cross-browser way, IE has its own way, through the element.currentStyle property, and the DOM Level 2 standard way, implemented by other browsers is through the document.defaultView.getComputedStyle method.

The two ways have differences, for example, the IE element.currentStyle property expect that you access the CCS property names composed of two or more words in camelCase (e.g. maxHeight, fontSize, backgroundColor, etc), the standard way expects the properties with the words separated with dashes (e.g. max-height, font-size, background-color, etc).

Also, the IE element.currentStyle will return all the sizes in the unit that they were specified, (e.g. 12pt, 50%, 5em), the standard way will compute the actual size in pixels always.

I made some time ago a cross-browser function that allows you to get the computed styles in a cross-browser way:

The above function is not perfect for some cases, for example for colors, the standard method will return colors in the rgb(...) notation, on IE they will return them as they were defined.

How to reset/remove CSS styles for a specific element or selector only

The CSS property all has a keyword initial that sets the CSS property to the initial value as defined in the spec. The all keyword has broad browser support except for the IE and Opera Mini families.

With all this said, I don't think a CSS reset is something feasible unless we end up with only one web browser, if the 'default' is set by browser in the end.

Why element.style always return empty in JS?

element.style returns the inline style used in html document and since the style is not set directly in html you will get and empty value

What you are looking for is the computedStyle which will returns the style that is applied to the element

JavaScript click event is not changing the style

Your function working. Only change this line. Add style on nav tag style="display: none" and set default display: none or block.
