Email validation using regular expression in PHP

Use this instead of a regular expression:

if(filter_var($email, FILTER_VALIDATE_EMAIL)) {
     //Valid email!
}

Using regular expressions to validate email addresses is not recommended as it is certainly not pretty, especially if you don't want to exclude somebody who has a valid email address that is correct according to RFC 822 grammar.

http://www.php.net/filter_var is your best bet.

A crazy example of a regex that attempts to validate email addresses according to RFC 822 grammar:

Validate email in PHP using... regex?

A regex is a regular expression: it's a pattern that describes a set of strings, typically a subset of the set of all possible strings. All special characters a regex can use are explained in the question that your question has been marked a duplicate of.

But specifically for your case; there's a nice tool that can explain regexes here:

Validating email addresses, the right way

But if you're using PHP >= 5.2.0 (which you probably are), you don't need to use a regex for that. It's much clearer code to use the built-in filter_var():

You don't have to worry about boundary cases or anything.

Validate email or mobile with regular expression

You can check the input using preg_match

1. Checks for the valid email

   • Email should have atleast two words length say aa@aa.aa
   • TLD should have atleast 2 characters and maximum of 4 characters
   • To include domains like co.in, use - /^\w{2,}@[\w\.]{2,}\.\w{2,4}$/

2. Checks for the valid mobile

   • Mobile should have 10 characters length and should start either with 7 or 8 or 9, to remove that restriction, change the $mobilePattern to /^[0-9]{10}$/
3. If it is not valid email or mobile, it returns error message

PHP email validation

I suggest you use the FILTER_VALIDATE_EMAIL filter:

But in that case, if a bug is found in the regular expression, you'll have to update your program instead of just updating PHP.

php preg_match with email validation issue

Just use:

The problem is your regex just looks for one of the accepted characters to occur. Instead, you should check if any invalid characters occur with a double negative.

/[^a-zA-Z\s]/ looks for any characters not included in the braces and the ! takes the opposite result. It will only be true if those characters are the only ones present in the string.
