Why is my core file not overwritten?
If you refer to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apport/+bug/160999 this is a bug in Ubuntu using O_EXCL
to open the file, preventing it from overwriting an existing core.

You can toggle adding pid to core file, so every time program started with new pid core name will have new pid as 'extension'

This pattern will overwrite the core files in pwd
The name will always be "core"

Stack memory error create a core file?
It depends on the operating system and language runtime. I'll assume you're talking about some flavour of Unix/Linux, since you mention a core dump.
Typically, there will be some amount (perhaps a single page) of unmapped virtual memory beyond the stack. If you overflow by less than that amount, then the program will attempt to access that, giving a segmentation fault. If the program doesn't handle the signal, then it will abort; and if core dumps are enabled, then one will be produced. You may need to enable core dumps, perhaps using ulimit -c unlimited
from the shell you use to launch the program.
If you overflow by a large amount, then you may instead overwrite some other part of the program's memory. If this happens, then all bets are off; the program could crash, or could continue in a corrupt state and cause any kind of damage at any point in the future.
That's assuming that, by "overflow" you mean using more stack memory than has been allocated by some combination of a deep call stack and large automatic objects. If you're talking about writing to the wrong part of the stack (e.g. by an out-of-bounds access to an automatic array), then you'll typically get random memory corruption rather than a segmentation fault; again, the program might shamble on in a corrupt state with unpredictable results.
File.Copy' does not overwrite a file
Use
File.Copy(filePath, newPath, true);
The third parameter is overwrite, so if you set it to true the destination file will be overwritten.

First, update all origin/<branch>
refs to latest:
git fetch --all
Backup your current branch (e.g. master
):
git branch backup-master
Jump to the latest commit on origin/master
and checkout those files:
git reset --hard origin/master
Explanation:
git fetch
downloads the latest from remote without trying to merge or rebase anything.
git reset
resets the master branch to what you just fetched. The --hard
option changes all the files in your working tree to match the files in origin/master
.

before resetting:
git checkout master
git branch new-branch-to-save-current-commits
git fetch --all
git reset --hard origin/master
After this, all of the old commits will be kept in new-branch-to-save-current-commits

Uncommitted changes
Uncommitted changes, however (even staged), will be lost. Make sure to stash and commit anything you need. For that you can run the following:
git stash
And then to reapply these uncommitted changes:
git stash pop

(and what are its permissions)?
It may be that the system will not overwrite an existing core dump if the permissions protect it (despite root
's supposed super powers).
Try deleting the current core file before running as root
(check the directory permissions as well to ensure root
can create files there).
For what it's worth, there's a long list of reasons why core won't be dumped. Some of these don't apply to your situation but you should examine them for clues (if my hypothesis above is incorrect).
- The core would have been larger than the current ulimit.
- You don't have permissions to dump core (directory and file).
- The file system isn't writable and hasn't sufficient free space.
- There's a sub directory named core in the working directory.
- There's a file named core with multiple hard links.
- The executable has the suid or sgid bit enabled. Ditto if you have execute permissions but no read permissions on the file.
- The segmentation fault could be a kernel oops, check the system logs.
Overwrite block core file without custom module in Magento
If you copy a code/core file to the code/local repository, the core file will be overwritten by the local file.
This is because of the include path order to load system files specified in app/Mage.php:

$paths[] = BP . DS . 'app' . DS . 'code' . DS . 'community';
$paths[] = BP . DS . 'app' . DS . 'code' . DS . 'core';
$paths[] = BP . DS . 'lib';
So in your case the system will search for the Product.php in following order:
- app/code/local/Mage/Catalog/Block/Product.php
- app/code/community/Mage/Catalog/Block/Product.php
- app/code/core/Mage/Catalog/Block/Product.php
- lib/Mage/Catalog/Block/Product.php
If the system cannot find any of these files, it will throw an error.
