How to set nginx max open files?
On CentOS (tested on 7.x):
Create file /etc/systemd/system/nginx.service.d/override.conf
with the following contents:
[Service]
LimitNOFILE=65536
Reload systemd daemon with:
systemctl daemon-reload
Add this to Nginx config file:
worker_rlimit_nofile 16384; (has to be smaller or equal to LimitNOFILE set above)
And finally restart Nginx:
systemctl restart nginx
You can verify that it works with cat /proc/<nginx-pid>/limits
.
Nginx File descriptor limit
The correct way to increase the limit is by setting worker_rlimit_nofile.
nginx loadbalancer Too many open files
I've added the following line to the nginx.conf:
worker_rlimit_nofile 20000;
Now it works, I don't get any error since the modification.
I hope it will help someone if have the same problem.
How to edit nginx.conf to increase file size upload
Add client_max_body_size
Now that you are editing the file you need to add the line into the server block, like so;
server {
client_max_body_size 8M;
//other lines...
}
If you are hosting multiple sites add it to the http context like so;
http {
client_max_body_size 8M;
//other lines...
}
And also update the upload_max_filesize
in your php.ini file so that you can upload files of the same size.
Saving in Vi
Once you are done you need to save, this can be done in vi with pressing esc
key and typing :wq
and returning.
Restarting Nginx and PHP
Now you need to restart nginx and php to reload the configs. This can be done using the following commands;
sudo service nginx restart
sudo service php5-fpm restart
Or whatever your php service is called.
Nginx on macOS : open files resource limit
Try this in your terminal:
ulimit -a
And the result should be sth similar to this:
core file size (blocks, -c) 0
data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited
file size (blocks, -f) unlimited
max locked memory (kbytes, -l) unlimited
max memory size (kbytes, -m) unlimited
open files (-n) 256
pipe size (512 bytes, -p) 1
stack size (kbytes, -s) 8192
cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited
max user processes (-u) 709
virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited
In your case, to increase the open files limit to 1024, use this code:
ulimit -n 1024
Check by running sudo nginx -t
and let's hope you don't see the error again

It was a DDOS attack on my PROXY that I stopped by allowing only my IP to access the PROXY.
I found it to be common lately - when u crawl a site, and the site identify you as a crawler, it will sometime DDOS attack your proxy until they go black.
One example of such site is amazon.com
