remove / reset inherited css from an element
"Resetting" styles for a specific element isn't possible, you'll have to overwrite all styles you don't want/need. If you do this with CSS directly or using JQuery to apply the styles (depends on what's easier for you, but I wouldn't recommend using JavaScript/JQuery for this, as it's completely unnecessary).
If your div is some kind of "widget" that can be included into other sites, you could try to wrap it into an iframe. This will "reset" the styles, because its content is another document, but maybe this affects how your widget works (or maybe breaks it completely) so this might not be possible in your case.
Reset/remove CSS styles for element only
The CSS3 keyword initial
sets the CSS3 property to the initial value as defined in the spec. The initial
keyword has broad browser support except for the IE and Opera Mini families.
Since IE's lack of support may cause issue here are some of the ways you can reset some CSS properties to their initial values:

As mentioned in a comment by @user566245 :
this is correct in principle, but individual mileage may vary. For
example certain elements like textarea by default have a border,
applying this reset will render those textarea's border less.
JAVASCRIPT ?
Nobody thought about other than css to reset css? Yes?
There is that snip fully relevant : https://stackoverflow.com/a/14791113/845310
getElementsByTagName("*") will return all elements from DOM. Then you
may set styles for each element in the collection:
answered Feb 9 '13 at 20:15 by VisioN
var allElements = document.getElementsByTagName("*");
for (var i = 0, len = allElements.length; i < len; i++) {
var element = allElements[i];
// element.style.border = ...
}
With all this said; i don't think a css reset is something feasable unless we end up with only one web browser .. if the 'default' is set by browser in the end.

How to remove/reset/not inherit the CSS properties of a DIV/element/... within the same CSS document?
You can't remove a rule, you could just override it with a more specific selector.
Another option if you are using media queries is to include desktop rule in a media query and get enabled only to the specified dimension like:
@media (min-width: 1024px) {
#nav li:hover > a, #nav ul ul :hover > a {
color: #bbb;
background: rgba(255, 255, 255, .95);
}
}
Is it possible to reset all inherited CSS propeties?
You cannot reset css properties, you can overwrite your css properties one by one, nothing automatic so far.
* {
property:inherit
...
... long list of all .css properties ...
propertyZ:inherit
}
and maybe (wishing)) comming soon :initial

How to remove all inherited CSS formatting for a table?
Try this.
From Eric Meyer's Reset CSS
table, caption, tbody, tfoot, thead, tr, th, td {
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
border: 0;
outline: 0;
font-size: 100%;
vertical-align: baseline;
background: transparent;
}
How can I disable inherited css styles?
The simple answer is to change
div.rounded div div div {
padding: 10px;
}
to
div.rounded div div div {
background-image: none;
padding: 10px;
}
The reason is because when you make a rule for div.rounded div div
it means every div
element nested inside a div
inside a div
with a class of rounded
, regardless of nesting.
If you want to only target a div that's the direct descendent, you can use the syntax div.rounded div > div
(though this is only supported by more recent browsers).
Incidentally, you can usually simplify this method to use only two div
s (one each for either top and bottom or left and right), by using a technique called Sliding Doors.
what's the correct way to remove/reset a css property via javascript?
There's no "correct way". Microsoft once invented style.removeAttribute(), but it's not supported. The best way is to set it to the standard-value.
Edit: As dystroy mentioned, setting it to "" resets it in all browsers, so that would be the best way.
