Checking cellular network type in iOS

2G / 3G cannot be distinguished via Reachability.h or any other third party libraries, as iPhone only provides network type information ( WWAN , WiFi , no Network ) to API.

However, if you are able to know the IP range of 2G or 3G network, you can determine which network speed / frequency the iPhone is using.

Check for internet connection with Swift

To solve the 4G issue mentioned in the comments I have used @AshleyMills reachability implementation as a reference and rewritten Reachability for Swift 3.1:

How to check network 2G or 3G in IOS?

In iOS 7 Apple provided a new way to get it.

Please read this link. The "Know your Radio" section.

The basic idea is to use the new

currentRadioAccessTechnology

added to the CTTelephonyNetworkInfo class. If you want to get notified everytime the connection changes you can listen for:

How to check if device is LTE, 3G, HSPA or Wi-Fi?

As of iOS7, information about the cellular connection is available using CTTelephonyNetworkInfo():
