How to break CSS inheritance?
I don't think you can break CSS inheritance per se, but you can try to circumvent it by following the rules of CSS specificity. Here's a good article about Specificity.
As a last resort, try adding !important
to styles in the widget to give it a higher specificity than the default styles.
#myWidget{
font: 100%/1 "Times New Roman", Serif !important;
}
If the client is also using !important
it could cause problems. If you could setup a jsFiddle with an example, we could help find the issue.
Note, going the route of adding !important
should be a last resort as it's the 'nuclear option' of style specificity.
How to break inheritance from parent element class in CSS?
An element will inherit a value for a property from its parent if it has:
some_property: inherit;
Many elements have this value as the default for many properties.
If you don't want it to inherit, then set a different value.
div { color: red; }
p { color: blue; }
span { color: initial }
<div>
<p>
2
<span>3</span>
</p>
</div>
How do I prevent CSS inheritance?
As of yet there are no parent selectors (or as Shaun Inman calls them, qualified selectors), so you will have to apply styles to the child list items to override the styles on the parent list items.
Cascading is sort of the whole point of Cascading Style Sheets, hence the name.
Break css inheritance to child element
I’ll continue this in the form of an answer, as it’ll be too long for comments
So i will have to give classes or ids to every single ul and li
No, of course not. There’s rarely a need to “bloat” one’s HTML code with “ids and classes for everything” – if one just choses the selectors a little more careful.
Let’s look at the first submenu link in your fiddle, the one with the text Tırmanış Malzemeleri
. Inspecting that using f.e. Firebug as I suggested, we see that for example the color: #999999
from the rule with the selector .subA li a
is displayed “crossed-out” with a line through it. And that is because the rule with selector #headwrap > ul li a
defines a different color
value – and that selector has a higher specificity.
#headwrap > ul li a
has a specificity of 0,1,0,3
, whereas .subA li a
has 0,0,1,2
– and so the first one “wins” here, and therefor its color value of #FF8000
is used for that a
element.
How to fix this?
Well, either by limiting the “reach” of the selector of the rule that is currently wining, like
#headwrap > ul > li > a
– this will only match a
elements that are children of the li
that are children of an ul
that is a child of #headwrap
, see here: http://jsfiddle.net/5k72c/1/ (I removed some of your original styles there, for better overview.)
Or by increasing the specificity of the other selector to a higher level (or at least the same, if it comes after the first one). (Your example is a little sub-optimal in this regard, since the ul.subA
element does not get shown, only ul.subB
does – so let’s assume the selector in question was .subB li a
, http://jsfiddle.net/5k72c/2/ – that works on the link Üst Giyim
, still displayed in orange).
Now, let’s change the selector .subB li a
to f.e. #headwrap > ul li .subB li a
– that gives it a higher specifity, and the link(s) are not orange any more, but become gray as specified in the rule: http://jsfiddle.net/5k72c/3/ (Yes, font-size and other properties differ as well, but those are side-effects from your existing stylesheet that I did not clean up; but this example should suffice to show the basics of what I’m talking about there.)
remove / reset inherited css from an element
"Resetting" styles for a specific element isn't possible, you'll have to overwrite all styles you don't want/need. If you do this with CSS directly or using JQuery to apply the styles (depends on what's easier for you, but I wouldn't recommend using JavaScript/JQuery for this, as it's completely unnecessary).
If your div is some kind of "widget" that can be included into other sites, you could try to wrap it into an iframe. This will "reset" the styles, because its content is another document, but maybe this affects how your widget works (or maybe breaks it completely) so this might not be possible in your case.
Inheriting the width of a text element to a line break HTML
The easiest way would be to simply not use an <hr>
tag, and instead opt for a simple underline with text-decoration: underline
:
h3 {
text-decoration: underline;
}
<div class="title">
<h3>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet.</h3>
</div>
Reset/remove CSS styles for element only
The CSS3 keyword initial
sets the CSS3 property to the initial value as defined in the spec. The initial
keyword has broad browser support except for the IE and Opera Mini families.
Since IE's lack of support may cause issue here are some of the ways you can reset some CSS properties to their initial values:

As mentioned in a comment by @user566245 :
this is correct in principle, but individual mileage may vary. For
example certain elements like textarea by default have a border,
applying this reset will render those textarea's border less.
JAVASCRIPT ?
Nobody thought about other than css to reset css? Yes?
There is that snip fully relevant : https://stackoverflow.com/a/14791113/845310
getElementsByTagName("*") will return all elements from DOM. Then you
may set styles for each element in the collection:
answered Feb 9 '13 at 20:15 by VisioN
var allElements = document.getElementsByTagName("*");
for (var i = 0, len = allElements.length; i < len; i++) {
var element = allElements[i];
// element.style.border = ...
}
With all this said; i don't think a css reset is something feasable unless we end up with only one web browser .. if the 'default' is set by browser in the end.

how to not inherit? or how to reset inherited width to the value before?
Try putting
width: auto;
on the button. That should fix it in this case.
