Some where able to get an updated favicon by adding an URL parameter: ?v=1 after the link href which changes the resource link and therefore loads the favicon without cache (thanks @Stanislav).

Favicon Usage

How did you import the favicon? How you should add it.

Normal favicon:

PNG/GIF favicon:

Chrome local problem

Another thing could be the problem that chrome can't display favicons, if it's local (not uploaded to a webserver). Only if the file/icon would be in the downloads directory chrome is allowed to load this data - more information about this can be found here: local (file://) website favicon works in Firefox, not in Chrome or Safari- why?

Renaming

Try to rename it from favicon.{whatever} to {yourfaviconname}.{whatever} but I would suggest you to still have the normal favicon. This has solved my issue on IE.

Base64 approach

Found another solution for this which works great! I simply added my favicon as Base64 Encoded Image directly inside the tag like this:

HTML Favicon.ico won't show on Google Chrome

Since you have a leading / in your href, you are referencing a file that will be in the root-folder. In case you have your page in a folder on your computer, not serving it from a local webserver, the leading / will tell the browser to look in the root folder of your filesystem. So the browser expect the file to be at C:/favicon.ico or similar, which is probably not what you've expected.

If you have the favicon.ico in the same folder as the web page, you could just remove the leading slash, and the icon should be visible.

Update:

As a debug option, your could try to add a tag that you know works. I borrowed this snippet from the StackOverflow source. Try replacing your link tag with this and see if you get the SO logo as your favicon.

Update 2:

It appears that there is a bug reported on Chromium where the favicon isn't displayed if the file is loaded locally, without being served through a webserver.

Favicon not showing up in Firefox or Chrome

Isn't this normal in Chrome and FF? I don't see the favicon in the address bar on any side in chrome. There the are displayed in the tab. The doc icon is use to show detailed information about the page.
If you find a page showing a favicon in the address bar you can look at the page source to find out how they did it.

This is due to a div markup which wrongly appears if the head section of your pages. Such markup should only be in the body.

Most browsers accept body-only markups in head. But Chrome has a particular behavior. When this happens, Chrome considers the head section to be closed. Therefore, following head markups are actually considered to be in the body. And since favicon markups do not work when there are in body...

This is why your favicon fails on Chrome but works on Firefox.

How to fix

Your first two div are around line 153, still in the head. As a hint, their ids are fb-root and fb-customerchat. That should help you spot which plugin is doing this.

Should you disable this plugin, at least for now? Your choice.

You should also report this issue to the plugin developer. You must not be the only one impacted by this issue.
