Detect Different Device Platforms Using CSS

Detect different device platforms using CSS

Well, after some (much more) playing around and the addition of some javascript, I've got the solution - the droid device was not using the resolution I believed it was:

<html>
<head>
<title>orientation and device detection in css3</title>

<link rel="stylesheet" media="all and (max-device-width: 480px) and (orientation:portrait)" href="iphone-portrait.css" />
<link rel="stylesheet" media="all and (max-device-width: 480px) and (orientation:landscape)" href="iphone-landscape.css" />
<link rel="stylesheet" media="all and (device-width: 768px) and (device-height: 1024px) and (orientation:portrait)" href="ipad-portrait.css" />
<link rel="stylesheet" media="all and (device-width: 768px) and (device-height: 1024px) and (orientation:landscape)" href="ipad-landscape.css" />
<link rel="stylesheet" media="all and (device-width: 800px) and (device-height: 1184px) and (orientation:portrait)" href="htcdesire-portrait.css" />
<link rel="stylesheet" media="all and (device-width: 800px) and (device-height: 390px) and (orientation:landscape)" href="htcdesire-landscape.css" />
<link rel="stylesheet" media="all and (min-device-width: 1025px)" href="desktop.css" />

</head>
<body>
<div id="iphonelandscape">iphone landscape</div>
<div id="iphoneportrait">iphone portrait</div>
<div id="ipadlandscape">ipad landscape</div>
<div id="ipadportrait">ipad portrait</div>
<div id="htcdesirelandscape">htc desire landscape</div>
<div id="htcdesireportrait">htc desire portrait</div>
<div id="desktop">desktop</div>
<script type="text/javascript">
function res() { document.write(screen.width + ', ' + screen.height); }
res();
</script>
</body>
</html>

how to detect in web page that it is running on mobile safari or websheet

Are you using a programming language to dynamically generate pages? If so, you can use user-agent sent by browser and according to it, decide which css to include.

Example:

<script type="text/javascript">
$("#btn_load_css").click(function(){
var w = screen.width;
var h = screen.height;
$(document).append("<link rel='stylesheet' "
+" href='css/defaults.css.php?w="+w+"&h="+h+"' />");
});
</script>

This will cause the css to load at the end of the file.

How to add CSS files for different platform devices?

What would be the reason for different stylesheets? if you use media queries with good break points you should be just fine using one stylesheet.

The optimum units to use would be em and %.

CSS detect either iphone ipad or any other handheld

Here are my notes on the matter: For any device - do your research on it's screen sizes and ratios and then do a @media query in your stylesheet for each device.

iPhone4

<link rel="stylesheet" media="only screen and (-webkit-min-device-pixel-ratio: 2)" type="text/css" href="iphone4.css" />

(portrait or landscape) on the iPad

<link rel="stylesheet" media="all and (orientation:portrait)" href="portrait.css">
<link rel="stylesheet" media="all and (orientation:landscape)" href="landscape.css">

Mobile Phones Portrait

 @media screen and (max-device-width: 480px) and (orientation: portrait){
/* some CSS here */
}

Mobile Phones Landscape

@media screen and (max-device-width: 640px) and (orientation: landscape){
/* some CSS here */
}

Mobile Phones Portrait or Landscape

@media screen and (max-device-width: 640px){
/* some CSS here */
}

iPhone 4+ Portrait or Landscape

@media screen and (max-device-width: 480px) and (-webkit-min-device-pixel-ratio: 2){
/* some CSS here */
}

iPhone 5 Only

@media only screen and (min-device-width: 640px) and (max-device-width: 1136px) and (-    webkit-min-device-pixel-ratio: 2) {
/* styles here */
}

iPhone < 5: aspect ratio

@media screen and (device-aspect-ratio: 2/3) {}

Tablets Portrait or Landscape

@media screen and (min-device-width: 768px) and (max-device-width: 1024px){
/* some CSS here */
}

Desktops

@media screen and (min-width: 1024px){
/* some CSS here */
}

Styles only between two sizes.

@media screen and (min-width: 319px) and (max-width: 1281px){}

BTDUBS - Did you know that WordPress has an is_iphone() global built in?

global $is_iphone;
if ( $is_iphone ) {
// do something if $is_iphone is true
}

How to detect a mobile device using jQuery

Editor's note: user agent detection is not a recommended technique for modern web apps. See the comments below this answer for confirmation of this fact. It is suggested to use one of the other answers using feature detection and/or media queries.

Instead of using jQuery you can use simple JavaScript to detect it:

if( /Android|webOS|iPhone|iPad|iPod|BlackBerry|IEMobile|Opera Mini/i.test(navigator.userAgent) ) {
// some code..
}

Or you can combine them both to make it more accessible through jQuery...

$.browser.device = (/android|webos|iphone|ipad|ipod|blackberry|iemobile|opera mini/i.test(navigator.userAgent.toLowerCase()));

Now $.browser will return "device" for all above devices

Note: $.browser removed on jQuery v1.9.1. But you can use this by using jQuery migration plugin Code

How to make website multi-platform devices?

The easiest and best way to do this is by using bootstrap. Take a look at the container rows and columns. Bootstrap is really easy to use and it will safe you a lot of time, it also comes with components that you can easily style by overwriting the bootstrap CSS with your own CSS.

Either use bootstrap 3 or the latest bootstrap 4 beta.
