Sass (version 3.2+) can do this fairly easily if you're ok with generating 2 different stylesheets.

Here's your mixins:

$ie-only: false !default;

@mixin hide-from-ie {

In your SCSS files:

Make a separate IE-only file that imports your other SCSS files, but has this at the top:

$ie-only: true;

Use conditional comments to serve old IE versions the generated css file with $ie-only set to true, and every other browser gets the one generated with $ie-only set to the default false.

CSS newbie question IE vs. Chrome

Notice than I do not have a conditional around the first style sheet.

Within the second style sheet just define the tag as:

Due to the way style sheets work, the browser will combine and apply both definitions.

Single huge .css file vs. multiple smaller specific .css files?

A CSS compiler like Sass or LESS is a great way to go. That way you'll be able to deliver a single, minimised CSS file for the site (which will be far smaller and faster than a normal single CSS source file), while maintaining the nicest development environment, with everything neatly split into components.

Sass and LESS have the added advantage of variables, nesting and other ways to make CSS easier to write and maintain. Highly, highly recommended. I personally use Sass (SCSS syntax) now, but used LESS previously. Both are great, with similar benefits. Once you've written CSS with a compiler, it's unlikely you'd want to do without one.

Reset/remove CSS styles for element only

The CSS3 keyword initial sets the CSS3 property to the initial value as defined in the spec. The initial keyword has broad browser support except for the IE and Opera Mini families.

As mentioned in a comment by @user566245 :

this is correct in principle, but individual mileage may vary. For
example certain elements like textarea by default have a border,
applying this reset will render those textarea's border less.

With all this said; i don't think a css reset is something feasable unless we end up with only one web browser .. if the 'default' is set by browser in the end.

How to target only IE (any version) within a stylesheet?

Internet Explorer 9 and lower :
You could use conditional comments to load an IE-specific stylesheet for any version (or combination of versions) that you wanted to specifically target.like below using external stylesheet.

However, beginning in version 10, conditional comments are no longer supported in IE.

Internet Explorer 10 & 11 :
Create a media query using -ms-high-contrast, in which you place your IE 10 and 11-specific CSS styles. Because -ms-high-contrast is Microsoft-specific (and only available in IE 10+), it will only be parsed in Internet Explorer 10 and greater.

Inline rule IE8 detection

I have 1 more option but it is only detect IE8 and below version.

As you specefied for embeded stylesheet. I think you need to use media query and condition comment for below version.

For the skeleton of your layout, consider using markup that is known to work, such as http://matthewjamestaylor.com/blog/perfect-multi-column-liquid-layouts or http://960.gs/ for liquid or fixed layouts, respectively.

Yeah, IE is a pain. If you want it to work in IE, you really want to test in IE every couple days. You don't want to save the pain for the end--you want to handle the nightmares one at a time.


By the way, if you think IE is a pain, try looking at your page with a mobile phone. The other day I went to REI.com with an iPhone and the middle fifth or more of the screen was taken up by a bunch of garbled markup that rendered as text.
