How to Change the Led Intensity of an Android Device

Can I change the LED intensity of an Android device?

HTC has an alternative API that supports this, however it's only on HTC Sense devices, and as of Gingerbread they've changed the permissions so it's only for their Flashlight app, not third party ones (unless you use root).

But on 2.2 HTC devices you can use it by writing a string to /sys/devices/platform/flashlight.0/leds/flashlight/brightness. This controls if the LED is on and how bright it is. For maximum brightness write "128\n", half brightness write "64\n". Easy to test from adb shell:

echo "128" > /sys/devices/platform/flashlight.0/leds/flashlight/brightness

And finally turn it off by writing "0\n" there.

I'd take the luma for the darkest color of your spectrum (= blue, 0.0722). Then scale the calculated RGB values so that the resulting luma matches this value. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luma_(video)

luma = 0.2126 * r + 0.7152 * g + 0.0722 * b;
// factor * luma = 0.0722
factor = 0.0722 / luma;
r *= factor;
g *= factor;
b *= factor;

P.S. With your simplifying assumption, this would be

luma = (r + g + b) / 3.0;
factor = 1.0 / (3.0 * luma);
r *= factor;
g *= factor;
b *= factor;

For this problem you should:

1. Check whether the flashlight is
   available or not?

2. If so then Turn Off/On

3. If not then you can do whatever, according to your app
   needs.

For Checking availability of flash in the device:

You can use the following:

 context.getPackageManager().hasSystemFeature(PackageManager.FEATURE_CAMERA_FLASH);

which will return true if a flash is available, false if not.

For turning on/off flashlight:

I googled out and got this about android.permission.FLASHLIGHT. Android manifests' permission looks promising:

Then make use of Camera and set Camera.Parameters. The main parameter used here is FLASH_MODE_TORCH.

eg.

Code Snippet to turn on camera flashlight.

Parameters p = cam.getParameters();
p.setFlashMode(Parameters.FLASH_MODE_TORCH);
cam.setParameters(p);
cam.startPreview();

Code snippet to turn off camera led light.

  cam.stopPreview();
  cam.release();

This seems to be a solution that works on many phones.

** Issues:**

There are also some problems while turning On/Off flashlight. eg. for the devices not having FLASH_MODE_TORCH or even if it has, then flashlight does not turn ON etc.

Typically Samsung creates a lot of problems.
