How to show shadow around the linearlayout in Android?

There is no such attribute in Android, to show a shadow. But possible ways to do it are:

1. Add a plain LinearLayout with grey color, over which add your actual layout, with margin at bottom and right equal to 1 or 2 dp

2. Have a 9-patch image with a shadow and set it as the background to your Linear layout

To set border you can create an xml file in your drawable with the below code.

border.xml

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

</shape>

and from your linearlayout set your background

    android:background="@drawable/border">

</LinearLayout>

but base on your image you are looking for cardView. Try to search for cardview.

Sure. You can add a border to any layout you want. Basically, you need to create a custom drawable and add it as a background to your layout. example:

Create a file called customborder.xml in your drawable folder:

 <shape xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:shape="rectangle">
   <corners android:radius="20dp"/> 
   <padding android:left="10dp" android:right="10dp" android:top="10dp" android:bottom="10dp"/>

 </shape>

Now apply it as a background to your smaller layout:

<LinearLayout android:orientation="vertical"

Create an XML file named border.xml in the drawable folder and put the following code in it.

Then add a background to your linear layout like this:

This XML was tested with a galaxy s running GingerBread 2.3.3 and ran perfectly as shown in image below:

Finally its works perfectly with all APIs

It can also be done using a stroke to keep the background as transparent while still keeping a border except at the bottom with the following code.
