As the comment suggests in the code snippet, it was tested using older versions of SQL Server. This may not work on SQL Server 2012.

Find a string by searching all tables in SQL Server

If you are like me and have certain restrictions in a production environment, you may wish to use a table variable instead of temp table, and an ad-hoc query rather than a create procedure.

Of course depending on your sql server instance, it must support table variables.

I also added a USE statement to narrow the search scope

SQL SELECT WHERE field contains words

Rather slow, but working method to include any of words:

SELECT * FROM mytable
WHERE column1 LIKE '%word1%'
OR column1 LIKE '%word2%'
OR column1 LIKE '%word3%'

If you need all words to be present, use this:

WHERE column1 LIKE '%word1%'
AND column1 LIKE '%word2%'
AND column1 LIKE '%word3%'

If you want something faster, you need to look into full text search, and this is very specific for each database type.

How can I search all columns in a table?

if you're looking for exact full-field matches. If you're looking for substring matches, you'll have to go about it the long way:

The wildcard in Access is "*". You use the percent sign in SQL Server. Take out the brackets.

Search for a string in all tables, rows and columns of a DB

This code should do it in SQL 2005, but a few caveats:

  1. It is RIDICULOUSLY slow. I tested it on a small database that I have with only a handful of tables and it took many minutes to complete. If your database is so big that you can't understand it then this will probably be unusable anyway.

  2. I wrote this off the cuff. I didn't put in any error handling and there might be some other sloppiness especially since I don't use cursors often. For example, I think there's a way to refresh the columns cursor instead of closing/deallocating/recreating it every time.

If you can't understand the database or don't know where stuff is coming from, then you should probably find someone who does. Even if you can find where the data is, it might be duplicated somewhere or there might be other aspects of the database that you don't understand. If no one in your company understands the database then you're in a pretty big mess.

Fastest way to find string by substring in SQL?

If you want to use less space than Randy's answer and there is considerable repetition in your data, you can create an N-Ary tree data structure where each edge is the next character and hang each string and trailing substring in your data on it.

You number the nodes in depth first order. Then you can create a table with up to 255 rows for each of your records, with the Id of your record, and the node id in your tree that matches the string or trailing substring. Then when you do a search, you find the node id that represents the string you are searching for (and all trailing substrings) and do a range search.
