How to get Real IP from Visitor?

How to get real ip of visitor if our app is behind a reverse proxy?
You have to set configurations on your reverse proxy in order to forward the real IP address to your web server.
For example using Nginx, you can set headers like this :
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header Host $http_host;
Here, the X-Real-IP
will provide you the real IP address on your backend server.
You must refer to the documentation of the reverse proxy software you're using (apache, nginx, etc..) for more information.
Get the client IP address using PHP
The simplest way to get the visitor’s/client’s IP address is using the $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']
or $_SERVER['REMOTE_HOST']
variables.
However, sometimes this does not return the correct IP address of the visitor, so we can use some other server variables to get the IP address.
The below both functions are equivalent with the difference only in how and from where the values are retrieved.
getenv() is used to get the value of an environment variable in PHP.

PHP most accurate / safe way to get real user IP address in 2017
Short answer:
$ip = $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'];
As of 2021 (and still) $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'];
is the only reliable way to get users ip address, but it can show erroneous results if behind a proxy server.
All other solutions imply security risks or can be easily faked.
How to get client IP address in Laravel 5+
Looking at the Laravel API:
Request::ip();
Internally, it uses the getClientIps
method from the Symfony Request Object:

How to determine a user's IP address in node
In your request
object there is a property called socket
, which is a net.Socket
object. The net.Socket
object has a property remoteAddress
, therefore you should be able to get the IP with this call:
request.socket.remoteAddress
(if your node version is below 13, use the deprecated now request.connection.remoteAddress
)

As @juand points out in the comments, the correct method to get the remote IP, if the server is behind a proxy, is request.headers['x-forwarded-for']
