The supported formats of the SECURITY_PRINCIPAL are very much depending on the service provider. Usually, the distinguished name of the user is expected, but Active Directory supports a couple of additional formats.

Using Apache Directory Studio

This means that your connection to the ldap server is wrong. I know the default username and password for Apache DS is admin and secret respectively.

Try the following as the bind DN or user string:

uid=admin,ou=system
