How do I convert a org.w3c.dom.Document object to a String?
If you are ok to do transformation, you may try this.

Converting org.w3c.dom.Element to org.dom4j.Element
Use the dom4j DOMReader.read()
method:

org.dom4j.Document document = reader.read(w3cDoc);
Or use the DOMReader.readElement()
method.

How to pretty print XML from Java?
Now it's 2012 and Java can do more than it used to with XML, I'd like to add an alternative to my accepted answer. This has no dependencies outside of Java 6.
