`[NSThread isMainThread]` always returns YES

Because queues are not threads, in order to check if you are on the main 'queue', you must use different code, something similar to this:

Just note that dispatch_get_current_queue is deprecated, and is subject to be completely removed in a later iOS/Mac OS version.

Have a look at the NSThread API documentation.

There are methods like

and + (NSThread *)mainThread

The documentation does not guarantee that the returned NSThread instance is always the same. A hypothetical implementation could be:

It's not likely that the actual implementation works like this. My gut feeling even says it would be safe to compare for instance identity–but the documentation does not support this.

The documentation does not state the opposite. So, yes, it's at least thinkable.

I'm trying to determine if this really has a chance of fixing a crash I can't reproduce.

Actually, in practice, I doubt that [NSThread currentThread] != [NSThread mainThread] is different from +[NSThread isMainThread], but that's only my feeling.

How to Mount Multiple EFI Partitions?

I wrote an EFI mount/unmount utility applet a while ago that uses an NSAlert with a combo box to try to avoid the death by dialog typical with AppleScripts. I extracted the script from that and added disk names to the initial dialog - the alert stuff makes it a bit longer than your snippet, but there should be something in there you can use:

dispatch_sync always scheduling a block on Main Thread

dispatch_sync() dispatches the block on the same thread, that's normal.

Apple's Documentation does not only says this, also says this:

As an optimization, this function invokes the block on the current thread when possible.

As a side note (I know you're talking about the synchronous version, but let's precisate this) I would say that also dispatch_async() may cause multiple blocks to be executed in the same thread.

GCD to perform task in main thread

No, you do not need to check whether you’re already on the main thread. By dispatching the block to the main queue, you’re just scheduling the block to be executed serially on the main thread, which happens when the corresponding run loop is run.

If you already are on the main thread, the behaviour is the same: the block is scheduled, and executed when the run loop of the main thread is run.
