Apple Push Notification Service Server Certificate Update

Apple Push Notification service server certificate update

In your case, no. You are already using the new authentication mechanism and don't need to change the key:

Note that Apple Push Notification service SSL provider certificates issued to you by Apple do not need be to updated at this time.

You can trust Firebase/Google has updated the root certificate on their end. (If they didn't, they'll probably lose the trust of several thousands of customers.) They own the 'notification servers' mentioned in the email.

Apple Push Notification service must incorporate the new root certificate (AAACertificateServices) - APNS certificate update

Since you're using Firebase, there's nothing to be done on your side. Firebase will handle the job for you, since they are the ones who communicate with Apple. The same applies for any Push service. You should only be concerned if you personally send Push requests to Apple servers.

A more complete explanation about this can be found here.

Which Root CA certs required for Apple's 3/29/21 HTTP/2 cert change?

In the mail you received the link is named (AAACertificateServices 5/12/2020), so this is the only certificate you need.

You can look also in the another link in the mail: Learn more about connecting to APNs. There is more info under Establish a Trusted Connection to APNs section.

How to Renew Push Notification Services Certificate

Just generate a new certificate and replace the old one.

As a side note: when your existing APNS certificate expired, if your server still uses it - existing iOS applications will not be able to receive any notifications from your server. But as soon as you regenerate certificate and update your server to use it - everything will be normal again without any changes to already installed apps.

Apple Push Notification Service and certificates, how does it work?

When a certificate is created, it is paired with a private key in your mac's keychain. When you export the certificate to another mac, export private key as well because without private key this certificate will not work.

Regarding how will it work on server, it depends on your server. If you have php server please have a look on this great Ray Wenderlich Tutorial. For node.js you can look at this. Or you can search for others.

Firebase Cloud Messaging with APN

There's nothing you need to do about it in your case, because you aren't the one running the push notifications provider.

If any changes needed to be made for other things Firebase will send you an email on how to do it.
