Simple Smart Phone detection

There are so many different mobile devices and so little standardization, and you probably would need to update your detection script from time to time as well as add new devices to the list. I found that www.handsetdetection.com has pretty complete list of handsets you can download. Also you can use their API for the real time detection on their side.
I don't know how it works on your app but I'd recommend to add detection info to your users' cookies in order to make api calls only for the unique devices.

Here is an example how I did this in startup plugin for ZF project

If you read the entire topic, they explain how to set a boolean value in a specific value file (as res/values-sw600dp/attrs.xml):

Because the sw600dp qualifier is only valid for platforms above android 3.2. If you want to make sure this technique works on all platforms (before 3.2), create the same file in res/values-xlarge folder:

Then, in the "standard" value file (as res/values/attrs.xml), you set the boolean to false:

Using navigator.userAgentData

You may also use navigator.userAgentData.mobile, but userAgentData is still experimental, so it is not recommended for use in production.

You can do this by simply running through a list of devices and checking if the useragent matches anything like so:

However since you believe that this method is unreliable, You could assume that any device that had a resolution of 800x600 or less was a mobile device too, narrowing your target even more (although these days many mobile devices have much greater resolutions than this)

Instead of using jQuery you can use simple JavaScript to detect it:
