Detect if a browser in a mobile device (iOS/Android phone/tablet) is used

Update (June 2016): I now try to support touch and mouse input on every resolution, since the device landscape is slowly blurring the lines between what things are and aren't touch devices. iPad Pros are touch-only with the resolution of a 13" laptop. Windows laptops now frequently come with touch screens.

Other similar SO answers (see other answer on this question) might have different ways to try to figure out what sort of device the user is using, but none of them are fool-proof. I encourage you to check those answers out if you absolutely need to try to determine the device.


iPhones, for one, ignore the handheld query (Source). And I wouldn't be surprised if other smartphones do, too, for similar reasons.

The current best way that I use to detect a mobile device is to know its width and use the corresponding media query to catch it. That link there lists some popular ones. A quick Google search would yield you any others you might need, I'm sure.

Detecting a mobile browser

Here's a function that uses an insanely long and comprehensive regex which returns a true or false value depending on whether or not the user is browsing with a mobile.

Using navigator.userAgentData

You may also use navigator.userAgentData.mobile, but userAgentData is still experimental, so it is not recommended for use in production.

You can do this by simply running through a list of devices and checking if the useragent matches anything like so:

However since you believe that this method is unreliable, You could assume that any device that had a resolution of 800x600 or less was a mobile device too, narrowing your target even more (although these days many mobile devices have much greater resolutions than this)

How to detect a mobile device using jQuery

Editor's note: user agent detection is not a recommended technique for modern web apps. See the comments below this answer for confirmation of this fact. It is suggested to use one of the other answers using feature detection and/or media queries.


Instead of using jQuery you can use simple JavaScript to detect it:

How to accurately detect if mobile phone via screen.availWidth (and not tablet, laptop etc)

With the innerWidth and innerHeight properties of the window you can calculate the width and height of your screen in pixels. On my 2560x1600 screen it returns the dimensions 1280x800, accounting for the device-pixel ratio.

Also, instead of selecting your images in JavaScript you could also use the <picture> element and use the srcset attribute. With the <picture> element you can add media queries for showing images based on the condition in that query. This would give you the ability to add both your image sets to the HTML and the browser then decides which image to show based on your query.

I'd suggest that you create pairs for your images to add the to the picture element. For example in an array of objects with the keys portrait and landscape. Loop over the array and create a <picture> element for each of those pairs with the <source> tags specified to the media query and its corresponding srcset value.

Otherwise to detect the device that someone is using, like a mobile phone, then check the userAgent for keywords that are recognized as phones. For detecting devices this is good, but for responsive web development, not so much as many other devices and new browser could be added and could break in the future.

Detect phone vs tablet

I think you're making a fundamentally arbitrary distinction between tablet, phone, or any other web enabled device here. It seems like the physical dimensions of the screen is the metric you want to use to dictate the content you serve.

In this case I would try to implement logic based on values passed by the user agent in the HTTP headers ([mobiforge.com...]) and degrade gracefully to prompting the user if information isn't available.

Your logic might look a bit like this:

  • If the user agent supplies a physical screen size in HTTP headers

    physical dimensions = UA value.
  • otherwise, if the user agent supplies a resolution and pixel dimensions

    physical dimensions = pixel dimensions divided by resolution.
  • (optionally) otherwise, use client side script to detect resolution and PPI
  • otherwise, if the user agent string looks like some kind of mobile device (regex)

    prompt the user to select.
  • otherwise

    assume a default option.

Update:
My answer is now three years old. It's worth noting that support for responsive design has progressed significantly and its now common to deliver the same content to all devices and rely on css media queries to present the site in a way that is most effective for the device it is being viewed on.
