Selenium WebDriver: clicking on elements within an SVG using XPath

For anyone interested, I solved this in the following ways:

1) I was originally testing this on OSX with Firefox 17 and Selenium 2.28/29, but figured out it only works (at least for me) on Windows with Firefox 18 and Selenium 2.29

2) interacting with SVGs with the standard:

driver.findElement(By.xpath(YOUR XPATH)).click();

doesn't work. You need to use Actions.

3) to interact with SVG objects, the following XPath works:

"/*[name()='svg']/*[name()='SVG OBJECT']";

The SVG object being anything under the SVG element (e.g. circle, rect, text, etc).

An example of clicking an SVG object:

WebElement svgObject = driver.findElement(By.xpath(YOUR XPATH));
Actions builder = new Actions(driver);
builder.click(svgObject).build().perform();

Note: you need to call the path inside the click() function; using:

moveToElement(YOUR XPATH).click().build().perform();

doesn't work.

How to click on svg element in Selenium Java

The desired element is a svg element so to click() on the element you need to induce WebDriverWait for the elementToBeClickable() and you can use either of the following locator strategies:

  • Using cssSelector:

    new WebDriverWait(driver, Duration.ofSeconds(10)).until(ExpectedConditions.elementToBeClickable(By.cssSelector("div[placement='bottom'] svg"))).click();
  • Using xpath:

    new WebDriverWait(driver, Duration.ofSeconds(10)).until(ExpectedConditions.elementToBeClickable(By.xpath("//div[@placement='bottom']//*[name()='svg']"))).click();

How do I test a click on SVG objects using Selenium webdriver?

In SVG, everything displayed is a block defined by coordinates. In your case, every state is a block as well and therefore has an XPath which you will be able to use in your Selenium code.

Use your browser developement tool to analyse the code of the page and find which block corresponds to the state you want to click on.

Here is the element corresponding to California.

When you have found it, right click on the element and "Copy XPath".

//*[@id="chartdiv"]/div/div[1]/svg/g[7]/g/g[1]/path[47]

However, do it two more times and you will see that the last node is never the same.

//*[@id="chartdiv"]/div/div[1]/svg/g[7]/g/g[1]/path[5]
//*[@id="chartdiv"]/div/div[1]/svg/g[7]/g/g[1]/path[34]

So we would like to find the <path> in //*[@id="chartdiv"]/div/div[1]/svg/g[7]/g/g[1]/ which the d attribute value starts with M371.75,174.28l. It should be something like:

//*[@id="chartdiv"]/div/div[1]/svg/g[7]/g/g[1]/path[starts-with(@d, "M371.75,174.28l")]

You shall have to repeat all these steps by yourself, because we might not have the same generated SVG.


But because the SVG is using another namespace:

  • /g becomes /*[name()="g"]
  • /svg becomes /*[name()="svg"]
  • /path becomes /*[name()="path"]

Which gives the following XPath:

//*[@id="chartdiv"]/div/div[1]/*[name()="svg"]/*[name()="g"][7]/*[name()="g"]/*[name()="g"][1]/*[name()="path"][starts-with(@d, "M371.75,174.28l")]

In Selenium:

How does XPath deal with XML namespaces?

Defining namespaces in XPath (recommended)

XPath itself doesn't have a way to bind a namespace prefix with a namespace. Such facilities are provided by the hosting library.

It is recommended that you use those facilities and define namespace prefixes that can then be used to qualify XML element and attribute names as necessary.


Here are some of the various mechanisms which XPath hosts provide for specifying namespace prefix bindings to namespace URIs.

(OP's original XPath, /IntuitResponse/QueryResponse/Bill/Id, has been elided to /IntuitResponse/QueryResponse.)

C#:

XmlNamespaceManager nsmgr = new XmlNamespaceManager(doc.NameTable);
nsmgr.AddNamespace("i", "http://schema.intuit.com/finance/v3");

Note that if the default namespace has an associated namespace prefix defined, using the nsResolver() returned by Document.createNSResolver() can obviate the need for a customer nsResolver().

Defeating namespaces in XPath (not recommended)

An alternative is to write predicates that test against local-name():

/*[local-name()='IntuitResponse']/*[local-name()='QueryResponse']

Or, in XPath 2.0:

/*:IntuitResponse/*:QueryResponse

Skirting namespaces in this manner works but is not recommended because it

  • Under-specifies the full element/attribute name.

  • Fails to differentiate between element/attribute names in different
    namespaces (the very purpose of namespaces). Note that this concern could be addressed by adding an additional predicate to check the namespace URI explicitly1:

     /*[    namespace-uri()='http://schema.intuit.com/finance/v3' 
    and local-name()='IntuitResponse']
    /*[ namespace-uri()='http://schema.intuit.com/finance/v3'
    and local-name()='QueryResponse']

Error in Clicking on SVG using Selenium Python

The desired element is a svg element. To click() on the element you have to induce WebDriverWait for the element_to_be_clickable() and you can use either of the following Locator Strategies:

  • Using CSS_SELECTOR:

    WebDriverWait(driver, 20).until(EC.element_to_be_clickable((By.CSS_SELECTOR, "div#leo-title-bar svg[data-icon='download']"))).click()
  • Using XPATH:

    WebDriverWait(driver, 20).until(EC.element_to_be_clickable((By.XPATH, "//div[@id='leo-title-bar']//*[name()='svg' and @data-icon='download']"))).click()
  • Note : You have to add the following imports :

    from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
    from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
    from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC

How to use xPath in Selenium WebDriver to grab SVG elements?

May be you need to use the Actions with name attribute in Xpath.
In your XPath use it -

"/*[name()='svg']/*[name()='SVG OBJECT']"  

Then try the following code snippet -

WebElement svgObj = driver.findElement(By.xpath(XPATH));
Actions actionBuilder = new Actions(driver);
actionBuilder.click(svgObj).build().perform();
