Find out if Character in String is emoji?

What I stumbled upon is the difference between characters, unicode scalars and glyphs.

For example, the glyph ‍‍‍ consists of 7 unicode scalars:

  • Four emoji characters: /li>
  • In between each emoji is a special character, which works like character glue; see the specs for more info

Another example, the glyph consists of 2 unicode scalars:

  • The regular emoji: /li>
  • A skin tone modifier: /li>

Last one, the glyph 1️⃣ contains three unicode characters:

  • The digit one: 1
  • The variation selector
  • The Combining Enclosing Keycap:

So when rendering the characters, the resulting glyphs really matter.

Swift 5.0 and above makes this process much easier and gets rid of some guesswork we needed to do. Unicode.Scalar's new Property type helps is determine what we're dealing with.
However, those properties only make sense when checking the other scalars within the glyph. This is why we'll be adding some convenience methods to the Character class to help us out.

Check if letter is emoji

It seems like those emojis are two characters long, but with split("") you are splitting between each single character, thus none of those letters can be the emoji you are looking for.

Instead, you could try splitting between words:

But of course this will miss emojis that are joined to a word, or punctuation.

Alternatively, you could just use a Matcher to find any group in the sentence that matches the regex.

Check if String Contains an Emoji in Ruby

You can use the Emoji Unicode property to test for Emoji using a Regexp, something like this:

Unicode® Technical Standard #51 "UNICODE EMOJI" contains a more sophisticated regex:

[Note: some of those properties are not implemented in Onigmo / Ruby.]

However, checking for Emojis probably not going to be enough. It is pretty clear that your text processing is somehow broken at some point. And if it is broken by an Emoji, then there is a chance it will also be broken by my name, or the name of Ruby's creator 松本 行弘, or by the completely normal English word “naïve”.

Instead of playing a game of whack-a-mole trying to detect every Emoji, mathematical symbol, Arabic letter, typographically correct punctuation mark, etc., it would be much better simply the fix the text processing.

How to verify if a string is ONLY ONE emoji?

You can try this function:

Detecting if a character in a String is an emoticon (using Android)

I was in fact able to use the linked iOS code to create the following function. I didn't realize that a String that contains, for example, a single emoticon will have a length of 2. So you can check if a character is in fact a surrogate.

I'm not entirely sure how to handle else if (substring.length > 1) from the iOS code but I think Character.isHighSurrogate(myChar) does the same job in that instance.

How to detect emojis in a String in Flutter using Dart?

Was looking for the same thing.

Found this newly published package:
https://pub.dartlang.org/packages/flutter_emoji

MIT license.

Looking at the source code it seems like this is the regex used:
